What’s an income protection claim?
Income protection insurance replaces lost income while you can’t work because of a partial or total disability caused by injury or illness. An income protection claim is for a set percentage of your pre-tax income while you can’t work. For example:
Up to 90% for the first six months
Up to 70% beyond six months, for a specified time
The percentage may be based on your annual income in the 12 months leading up to your injury or illness.
Who’s eligible for an income protection claim?
Income protection claims are also known as ‘total temporary disability’ or TTD claims. You’re eligible to make an income protection claim or TTD claim if:
You have an income protection insurance policy
Your injury or illness stop you from working in your usual occupation.
To make an income protection claim, your injury or illness doesn’t have to be work-related and could include, e.g.:
An injury sustained in a motor vehicle accident, at home or while playing sport
A diagnosed illness such as cancer, a heart condition, a stroke or infectious disease
A diagnosed psychological condition such as PTSD or depression
It’s possible to claim income protection for a work-related injury (as well as making a workers’ compensation claim) but any payment received may be considered alongside your WorkCover payments. Our experienced workers’ compensation and superannuation teams can help you navigate and manage your claims.
What income protection insurance can I claim?
Your entitlement to claim income protection depends on:
Your income protection insurance policy wording
The impact of your disability on your life and ability to work
A successful income protection claim provides monthly payments, at a specified percentage of your income, for a specified benefit period, which might be:
The time detailed in your policy (e.g. two years)
The age detailed in your policy (this is the ‘benefit period’, e.g. 65 years)
